Speeding on Lauderdale Road

We the undersigned petition Westminster City Council to Consult with residents of Lauderdale Road about the best way to reduce speeding on their street

Residents of Lauderdale Road in Maida vale frequently see cars speeding outside their homes. This is dangerous and illegal. The 20 miles an hour speed limit is clearly not been enforced. Several residents have made suggestions about how the situation can be improved (such as cameras, speed bumps, buildout planters, change of direction on the one-way street etc) but have been told by the council that no action will be taken as the data from the Vehicle Activated Sign shows that there is no need. This is contradictory to the experience of residents and we are asking Westminster council to consult with residents.

Council response

Dear Councillor Nafsika Butler-Thalassis

Thank you for your petition and we can offer response to the following;

WCC has previously corresponded(see attached) highlighting on how road safety resources are prioritised to locations with historical 'personal injury causality' (PIC) data in addition to 'speed and volume' counts. With regards to both metrics the existing situation displays normal outputs.

It is appreciated that this is not the preferred response, but we must assess and allocate our limited resources to those locations with historical road safety issues. We have organised the installation of additional 20mph roundels on the carriageway which will remind drivers of the posted speed limit.

Additional avenues to consider are;

Community Roadwatch
Safety cameras are only one of the ways to tackle speed related deaths and serious injuries on our roads. We work in partnership with the Metropolitan Police on many other speed management initiatives, including
https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/safety-and-security/road-safety/community-roadwatch
Community Roadwatch aims to reduce speeding in residential areas, and gives local residents the opportunity to work side by side with their local police teams, and use speed detection equipment to identify speeding vehicles in their communities.
To take part in Community Roadwatch, or to suggest a residential area where there are community concerns around speeding, email CommunityRoadwatch@met.police.uk and tell them which borough you live in. The relevant local MPS Safer Transport Team will be in touch.

The public can report dangerous, illegal, or antisocial road user behaviour directly to the police with their online reporting tool,
https://www.met.police.uk/roadsafelondon/

Every report helps the police and TfL to understand where and when bad road user behaviour takes place.

The information and intelligence gathered may lead to a prosecution.
