INSTALL A RAISED ROUNDABOUT, SPEED HUMPS & PEDESTRIAN CROSSING FOR THREE SCHOOLS ON/NEAR GREYCOAT STREET, WESTMINSTER CITY COUNCIL

We the undersigned petition Westminster City Council to Install a raised roundabout on Rochester Row, a pedestrian crossing and speed humps in the intersection turning into Greycoat Street from Rochester Row and speed humps along Greycoat Street itself, for the three schools in the area (The Grey Coat Hospital, Burdett-Coutts & Townshend Foundation Church of England Primary School, and Westminster School Sports Centre).

Following the death of my four-year-old Corgi dog, who died on site after a speeding van turned from Rochester Row into Greycoat Street outside our home, during the daylight at 16:00 Friday 13th October 2023 and hit her, unable to stop due to the speed over 20mph, at which the driver was travelling, and due to careless driving. I would like to instate more precautionary road safety measures in the area, especially as there are school children, pedestrians, and residents walking across these roads at all hours.

Council response

Dear Amanda,

Thank you for submitting the petition for Rochester Row which requests further road safety measures for all road users following the tragic loss of a much loved pet.

I can confirm that works to complete the Rochester / Greycoat junction improvements are due to recommence in Jan/Feb 2024 which will include a raised central roundabout to the main junction and installation of pedestrian traffic islands to help crossing Rochester Row near Greycoat Street.

We will also request a Speed and Volume measurement within Greycoat Street to better understand actual traffic conditions, in addition to review of historical ‘personal injury collisions’ (PIC’s) around the area. This will be requested for mid-January when traffic conditions are more typical. If the speeds are high then additional measures would be considered.

Kind regards
